Wheel Of Fortune Host Pat Sajak Makes First Public Appearance Since Undergoing Emergency Surgery

Publish date: 2024-05-05

Pat Sajak, the longtime host of Wheel of Fortune, underwent emergency surgery late last month after it was discovered he had a blocked intestine, and he has been recovering at his Severna Park, Maryland home ever since. Now, the 73-year-old appears to be doing well, as he made his first public appearance this weekend at the Washington Capitals hockey game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

According to the Capitals blog RMNB, Sajak attended the game with his daughter Maggie and he wore a red Capitals pullover and a black Baltimore Orioles hat. When the cameras found Sajak in the crowd, NBC Sports Washington announcer Craigh Laughlin said, “Always great to see Pat around the arena. Loves his hockey. He’s getting better. He says the worst has passed Joe B after that surgery so well wishes to Pat and the family.”

Great news! Pat has returned home where he will continue to recuperate. All of us at Wheel of Fortune are glad he's on the mend and look forward to having him back! Below is a message he asked us to share with all of you: pic.twitter.com/HjEiOII5JW

Sajak has been keeping his fans up-to-date on his Twitter account, and he said that he celebrated Thanksgiving at home with his family. He also joked that they “discussed politics” when they asked who voted for more cranberries, they also talked about “gender issues” when they tried to figure out if their bird was a boy or a girl, and “climate change” was also a popular topic because the oven was making the home warm.

He also thanked his fans for their good wishes during his recent illness, and he is happy to say that the worst has passed. Sajak added that he would be back to work soon unless Vanna White had completely taken over.

During Sajak’s absence from Wheel of Fortune, the longtime puzzle model took over his hosting duties for two weeks.

Pat Sajak and Vanna White have co-hosted Wheel of Fortune since 1982, and the show’s Twitter account posted a puzzle board with the message “Get well soon Pat.” This is the first time in 37 years that White has taken over the hosting duties. But, there was an episode in 2013 where Sajak had to go backstage to watch a replay that was too close to call on stage.

While Sajak was gone, White took the opportunity to be in the host role for a few minutes. Vanna White says she tries to entertain the audience even though they don’t get to hear her talk much. She told the Washington Post that that she always tries to give fans “a little piece of who I am.”

“Our viewers are loyal,” said White. “They’ve seen Pat and me together for 30 years. It’s like Ken and Barbie. How do you break them up?”
